more than I could have hoped for

I had hoped we could have a President who wouldn’t embarrass us, period. Social justice, environmental conservation, safety, economic stability, I wanted those, too. But I wanted smart and caring. And full sentences. Paragraphs, even.

As a mom, my world view is through the mom-lense. I spend a good deal of time thinking about my children, other mothers, and other mothers’ children. Everywhere, but especially where there is violence.

President Obama’s first television interview, to Al-Arabiya, and these words have  stayed with me:

And so what I want to communicate is the fact that in all my travels throughout the Muslim world, what I’ve come to understand is that regardless of your faith — and America is a country of Muslims, Jews, Christians, non-believers — regardless of your faith, people all have certain common hopes and common dreams.

And my job is to communicate to the American people that the Muslim world is filled with extraordinary people who simply want to live their lives and see their children live better lives. My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy.

Full heart, full sentences and a full transcript here.
