Most of you know that my husband, Steve Barbaria, is also a painter and typically has something interesting going on in his head and in his studio. For the past year or so (year or two?) he’s been painting for himself, exploring political situations that intrigue him, mostly through re-imagined maps. He’s starting to go public with the work now, pulling it out of the studio and looking for a gallery. He has much of it on a website here (www.stevebarbaria.wordpress.com). Here are some of my favorites:
Global Re:positioning | Oil on canvas. Size: 36″ x 50.” This one hangs in our studio and is also on the homepage of the studio’s website, here.
by West South | Oil on canvas. Sizes: 12″ x 12.”
Medusa | Mixed media—oil, acrylic and collage. Size: 24″ x 36.” This one is inspired by the kids who work in the electronic graveyards in Africa, scavenging for parts. The ends of the computer cables are all attached to maps of imagined origins.
Barracuda | Oil on board and found object. Size: 16″ x 16.” re:mapping the gulf oil spill, and the romance of the American automobile. And yes, that is a real dip stick.
Steve is the most self-disciplined person I know. He works without dramatic proclamations, or an audience, and certainly without checking his blog stats. He just works. Unlike someone else I know who has to muster up personal challenges to make stuff happen for more than ten minutes. I think his work is inspiring and thought provoking. Take a look.

Wow. Those are wonderful.
Spectacular. Can’t decide on a favorite.
